What are dental fillings?

Dental fillings repair damage caused by dental caries, or decay. When decay is in its initial stages, it forms a cavity. Cavities can potentially cause damage down to the tooth root, leading to the need for extraction and the possible spread of decay to other teeth. 

You experience decay when plaque collects on the surface of your teeth. Plaque is a thin layer of bacteria that can build up and cause small holes in your tooth enamel. 

Traditionally, dental fillings were made of a combination of metal alloys that didn't blend in with the look of your smile. Today, South Hill Family Dentistry uses dental fillings made of composite resin that is safe, durable, and close in appearance to your natural tooth enamel. 

What happens when I get a dental filling?

Getting a dental filling takes just one appointment that lasts about an hour. To start your appointment, your hygienist takes a series of X-rays to assess the cavity and plan for the filling.

Your dentist numbs your mouth using an injection of a local anesthetic. They use hand-held tools to remove any decay in the affected tooth, clearing any lingering bacteria and debris to reduce the risk of infection. 

Your dentist then paints the liquid composite resin to the top of your tooth where the decay was. After applying several layers of the material to restore the size and shape of your original tooth, they cure it with a specialized light. 

Once the filling dries, your dentist refines your bite and relays any immediate care instructions. 

How long do dental fillings last?

Dental fillings can last many years, especially if you practice good oral hygiene. This means twice daily brushing, daily flossing, and professional cleanings and exams every six months.
